Picking a Goal Time
Picking a goal time for a race is a good idea for a runner that has some experience. It’ll give you something to aim for and encourage you to push yourself and improve. It’s important for the race and for your training.
I think the best way to set a goal time is to examine your previous races and consider how much you’re going to able to realistically improve. It’s also important to be flexible and adjust the goal time as necessary based on how training is progressing and any unexpected factors that may arise.
The chart below estimates finish time estimates based off of a runner’s fastest mile. These are obviously only estimates. Finish times are going to be dependent on a lot of factors like training methods, the weather, the difficulty of the course, etc. The estimates assume that the runner has completed a full training plan.
